A Short History of Parish Records
Parish Registers were first ordered to be kept by Thomas Cromwell, Vicar General of King Henry VIII in 1538.

 

Record the birth of a child, or pay a fine!
In 1696 an order was passed that a fine of 2 pounds was to be imposed on all who did not report the birth of a child to the vicar within 5 days.
