Son of Phillip. Also originates from the Greek name Philippos "friend of horses" as philos means friend and hippos means horse.

History:
Name was common during the Middle Ages but became less popular from the Seventeenth Century when England was invaded by Phiilip II of Spain. Became popular again from the Nineteenth Century.
